What to expect

People are welcome to come along and take a look at our facilities and meet some spelling racehorses and also some retired ones too.

This will be a fairly informal afternoon - take a look at the facilities and chat with Anna and Michael about their involvement with the breeding and racing industry both in New Zealand and overseas. With many years of experience between them, you may find out something that you didn't know. From working in the breeding barns in Ireland, to flying stallions to South Africa - there are plenty of stories to hear.

Anna is also the coordinator of the South Island Foster Foal Service and will be happy to talk to guests about how the Service is run. Anna will be doing a talk at 3pm about the Foster Foal Service in New Zealand and explaining how it works. Any questions are welcome.

About Us

Pear Tree Farm is a small agistment farm based near Waimate in South Canterbury.

We spell racehorses and also do quite a bit of weaning and then growing out young horses and manage them through to being broken in.

Our daily routine is feeding and checking that the horses are in good health. We spend a lot of time with the horses just talking to them, patting them and just hanging out with them.

In a voluntary role, Anna coordinates the South Island Foster Foal Service. She collates information from around the South Island about mares who have lost their foals or foals who need a foster mare. When the need arises, Anna puts the two parties in touch and offers advice on the fostering process and also raising orphan foals.
