What to expect

NZTR will host a free, family-friendly community event at St Peter’s in Cambridge, giving people the opportunity to get up close to the Thoroughbred and learn more about the horses, people and skills behind New Zealand’s racing and equestrian industries.

The event will be designed as a fun and interactive day for the whole family, combining live demonstrations and educational experiences with plenty of activities for children.

Visitors will have the opportunity to see Thoroughbreds in action through demonstrations featuring some of New Zealand’s leading horses and riders, showcasing their athleticism, versatility and the different lives Thoroughbreds can enjoy both during and after their racing careers.

A racing horse simulator will give visitors the chance to experience what it feels like to ride a racehorse, while other interactive activities will provide an insight into the skills, training and care involved in working with Thoroughbreds.

For younger visitors, there will be plenty to see and do, including a design-your-own racing silks activity, games, competitions, giveaways and opportunities to learn about horses in a fun and accessible way.

Food trucks and refreshments will help create a relaxed community atmosphere where families can spend the day, watch demonstrations, meet horses and riders and discover more about the Thoroughbred.

About Us

New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) is the governing body for Thoroughbred racing in New Zealand. We are responsible for leading, administering and developing the sport, working alongside racing clubs, trainers, jockeys, owners, breeders and the wider racing community.

A major part of our role is also the welfare of our horses and people. NZTR works to support Thoroughbreds throughout their lives, from their early years and racing careers through to retraining, rehoming and life after racing. Our welfare work includes improving racing and training safety, supporting research and education, strengthening horse traceability and helping create positive pathways for horses when their racing careers come to an end.
