Frequently Asked Questions
About the Event
What is National Thoroughbred Week?
National Thoroughbred Week is a pilot program, the first of its kind here in Australia and New Zealand. Based on the popular UK National Racehorse Week and NZ Open Farms Day, it is a transparent, open invitation to connect with the Thoroughbred racing and breeding industry. Think of it as a backstage pass to the world of Thoroughbred horses, a community-first event with nothing to hide and everything to share.
When is National Thoroughbred Week?
The Week runs from 20-24 November 2025. Each participating host location will have its own open days and times within the week.
Where is it held?
Events are held at participating venues across Australia and New Zealand. Please see the Find An Event page for all the details.
Who is behind the event?
National Thoroughbred Week is run by a group of like-minded industry professionals, with a common purpose of promoting our industry to a wider audience. We are primarily volunteer-led and rely on sponsors and contributors to cover the operational expenses of delivering an event of this scale. We also have a GoFundMe page to accept financial contributions to help towards operational expenses.
Registration & Tickets
Is it free to attend?
Yes, all events are free, but registration is essential for every venue you plan to visit.
How do I register?
Simply find your chosen event on our website’s Find An Event page, click “Register” and create an account. From there, you can book into your preferred event and manage it all from ‘Your Account’.
Do I need to register for each event separately?
Yes. Each open day is managed by the individual location, so you’ll need to register for every location you plan to attend.
What if I can no longer attend?
You can cancel your booking via Your Account. Some locations have limited spots so please cancel your booking if you can no longer attend to free up your spot for someone else.
What do you do with my contact details?
We’ll only use your contact details to keep you updated on important elements of the event, to remind you to attend, and to send a post-event survey at the end of the event to help us better understand your experience and perception of the industry (it’s a pilot program after all, so we’d love to know what you thought!)
Visiting on the Day
What should I wear?
Most locations are working farms or stables, so for safety, we recommend comfortable, closed-toe shoes. You’ll also most likely be outside, so dress for the weather conditions. Some race clubs may have dress codes; please see the individual event listing for any requirements.
Will there be food and drinks available?
Some venues may provide these, but you are welcome to bring your own. Check the individual event listing for details.
Is the event suitable for children?
Yes, but children must be supervised at all times. Please check each venue’s listing for any age restrictions. Most event locations will be suitable for a pram.
Can I pat or feed the horses?
At most locations, yes but it will depend on the individual location. Please always follow the direction of staff before approaching or feeding any animal and ensure you’re only feeding the animals with suitable, animal-friendly foods.
Is photography allowed?
In most cases, yes — but always ask permission before taking photos of horses, staff, or other guests.
Will I be photographed or filmed?
Most locations will have a photographer or videographer on-site capturing the event and special moments. These photos may be used for future promotional purposes. Each location will have a Notice of Filming sign, and generally, your entry constitutes consent, but please speak to a member of staff if you do not wish to be photographed.
What happens in bad weather?
Events will proceed in most conditions, but some activities may be modified or cancelled for safety. Updates will be sent to registered attendees and posted on our social media accounts.
Transport & Accessibility
Is there parking or public transport available?
Parking availability and public transport accessibility will vary by venue. Please check the event listing for details.
Is the event wheelchair accessible?
Accessibility varies by location, but most locations will be suitable. Please check the event listing or contact us directly if you have specific requirements.
Industry Information
Where do I find more information about careers in the Thoroughbred industry?
Most state racing authorities will have information on industry careers. Try resources such as Racing Victoria, Thoroughbred Industry Careers, Racing Jobs, Godolphin Flying Start and Silverdale Academy. Staff at each location should also be able to answer any questions you may have.
Where do I find more information about horse welfare issues?
Visit the Thoroughbreds 101 page on our website. Also visit the Kick Up website, an independent platform providing a balanced view to false claims that have been made about horse racing and breeding.
I’m interested in rehoming opportunities. Where do I find more information about horse re-trainers and Off-The-Track Thoroughbreds?
Visit the Thoroughbreds 101 page on our website for a list of re-trainers. Most state authorities will also have a list of providers and resources on their websites such as Racing Victoria and Thorough Care SA.
